Rooted in community: A year of building more than decks

Published: December 11, 2025

Another year’s been wrapped and, as the Best Deck team looks back, the reflection goes beyond projects that turned sketches into real spaces. Yes, there have been decks, pergolas and everything in between. But the real story of 2025 has been about the people and communities Best Deck has had the privilege to support. Building structures is what the company does, yet this year has been a powerful reminder that the work stretches far beyond composite wood. It’s connected to the places where South Africans live, the spaces where children play and the neighbourhoods everyone drives through every day.

With genuine gratitude, Best Deck wants to share some of the initiatives close to the team’s heart, celebrate the partnerships that make them possible and extend a sincere thank you to every client and contractor who has been part of the journey. Nothing happens in isolation.

The Best Deck philosophy has always been that the spaces the company helps create are more than superior, beautiful materials. They’re environments for living and working, a haven for precious nature and a cornerstone for community life. This belief, deeply held by directors like Stuart Martin, guides everything the team does.

Stuart and his wife, Pernille, have their own story that captures the Best Deck ethos perfectly. On moving to the Dainfern Golf Estate in the 1990s, they planted saplings to create a natural haven and to prevent golf balls from landing in the swimming pool. Soon, they found themselves fostering a small forest that now teems with life. It’s not just about planting some trees, though. Their quiet habit of “just planting one more” captures what Best Deck stands for as a team: a dedicated, consistent approach to making a lasting difference. For Best Deck, true success is measured not only in beautiful, durable decks but in the shade of a newly planted tree, the cleanliness of a public road and the safety of a restored bridge.

Cultivating green legacies

Best Deck is committed to the environment that inspires the work and is acutely aware of the responsibility to protect the natural world.

This year, Best Deck was honoured to partner with the inspiring Better Fourways initiative, a community-based NPO committed to improving the entire Fourways area of Johannesburg. A vibrant community needs green lungs, so Best Deck sponsored and helped plant no fewer than 3 000 trees along Winnie Mandela Drive! This wasn’t just a corporate exercise. The team got hands dirty alongside dedicated residents and locals. In doing so, Best Deck became an integral part of investing in cleaner air, natural beauty and a cooler, greener corridor for generations to come. Each tree represents a promise for a healthier, more sustainable future. Best Deck mirrors this principle in the choice to create and use environmentally friendly, long-lasting products.

The team also regularly joined community trash clean-ups along Winnie Mandela Drive. Being able to take true pride in an area begins with its appearance. By participating actively in these efforts, Best Deck hopes to inspire individuals and other businesses to see their public spaces as extensions of their own homes and companies. It’s a simple, direct action with a powerful message: Best Deck cares.

Building connections by supporting infrastructure

Usually, Best Deck’s expertise goes into decks, pergolas and outdoor living spaces: structures meant to bring people together. This year, the team had the chance to apply those skills to something a little different.

At the Dainfern Golf Course, a key recreational hub for many locals and visitors, Best Deck identified a pressing need. The main pedestrian bridge had deteriorated, becoming increasingly unsafe for daily golfers, families and walkers. Best Deck took on the project, sponsoring and constructing a brand new, robust bridge. The team is immensely proud of connecting the pathways safely as a tangible example of how resources and skills can ensure that shared spaces are not only beautiful but safe and accessible for everyone.

2026: The year of doing even more

Looking ahead, Best Deck is excited to finish two projects currently in progress. The company is donating 17 specialised platforms for a dog parkour course at Marks Park in Randburg. This one’s close to the team’s heart. It’s fun, brings people and their pets together and encourages healthier, more active lifestyles.

In the spirit of supporting spaces of gathering, Best Deck is also preparing a donation of 79m² of decking for a church in Diepsloot. The company believes in supporting the places that provide refuge, hope and unity, and looks forward to helping create a stable, welcoming outdoor area for the congregation and the wider community.

Heartfelt thanks

None of this (not the stunning private projects, nor these community initiatives) would be possible without the unwavering support of valued clients and trusted contractors.

To Best Deck’s clients:

A foundation for the future

As Best Deck steps into a new year, the commitment remains the same: a simple idea that a business should leave things better than it found them. Whether that’s the beauty of a new deck in someone’s garden, the cool shade under a newly planted tree or the solid, safe feel of a rebuilt bridge underfoot, Best Deck is here to build with intention and care.

Thank you for being part of the Best Deck story. Here’s to an even more impactful 2026!
